Just Released: Workers' Compensation Audit Report #1: Employee Survey Results
The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has released Workers’ Compensation Audit Report #1: Employee Survey Results, the first in a series of reports examining BART’s workers’ compensation program.
This report focuses on employee experiences and identifies opportunities to strengthen how the program informs, supports, and serves employees who experience workplace injuries.
The audit found that employees reported challenges understanding the claims process, accessing information, and navigating available support. Survey results also indicate room to improve overall satisfaction with the program, particularly among employees who have filed claims.
The findings highlight gaps in communication, policies, and training that can create confusion, delays, and barriers for employees seeking support.
Ensuring employees understand their rights, benefits, and the claims process is critical to supporting workplace injuries effectively while maintaining compliance and managing costs.
To address these issues, the OIG recommended that BART develop a strategic communication approach, formally document workers’ compensation policies and procedures, and provide targeted, ongoing training for supervisors and managers.
Management agreed with the findings and recommendations and outlined steps to improve communication, accessibility of information, and training.
Future reports in this audit series will examine program oversight, internal controls, and financial obligations.
We encourage you to review the summary video and full report for detailed insights:
