Just Released! BART Can Strengthen How it Manages Overtime

The BART Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has released a new audit examining how overtime is used across the District — and where BART can improve oversight, forecasting, and cost control.

Staffing challenges, complex work rules, and training bottlenecks continued to drive overtime, even as overall costs declined in FY2024. Outdated systems and manual timekeeping processes further limited BART's ability to monitor, forecast, and manage these costs effectively.

Targeted improvements — like modernizing timekeeping tools and tightening oversight policies — could help BART reduce risk, control costs, and take a more strategic approach to overtime management.
